A BUTCHER’S BOY…….michael hansen
—————————————————————————————
She went downtown…to look around…her darlin’ boy could not be found
She went back home…to sing the blues…she lit a match and she sparked the fuse
Her house it went…up in smoke…she fell asleep then she awoke
She crossed that shore…she left her life…green grassy hills…know no more strife
She found herself to be full of joy…she forgot all about her butcher’s boy
She now plays cards with the king & queen and she settling up in eternity
—————————————————————————————————-
Her father he came in from work…found his home up in smoke
He called in the insurance claim…got a brand new house and a brand new name
—————————————————————————————————-
Dont ya dig my grave…don’t ya mark no stone
just tell this world to leave me alone
Don’t turn my life into a lie
don’t tell them love is why i died
People they…they don’t know nothin’
They’re always fightin’ they’re always fussin’
It takes a lot to laugh and cry
My trains on the track and Im ready to ride
——————————————————————————————————-
Just scatter my bones…on the loan prairie
And if you get the blues you can think of me
I am the girl you let pass by
If you want to see me again you’re gonna have to die

MY ROSE, MY BRIDE written by Michael Hansen
—————————————————————————-
I wish that girl…that I adore
Would like me just a little more
I hope one day…while she skips the street
One fine morning we might meet
—————————————————————
And I’d be dressed in clothes so fine
She in a tailored dress devine
And we might walk just a little way
And get married just to pass the day
—————————————————————
We’ll build a house just off the square
We’ll raise chickens and a cold black mare
we’ll make our money honestly
and give away what we can for free
————————————————————-
And together we will always be
Ragged I And Rosie She
We shall tend to the kinship tree
we’ll have children for the family
————————————————-
One for mother…so to spoil
One for father…to help him toil
and one to sail the world around
to show the lost….that they have been found
———————————————————————————
And when our age…it makes us rest
Again we’ll dress up in our best
We shall dance…the silver night away
And love forever and a day
——————————————————————
And then midnight…it will take out breath
And we shall happily greet our death
But once we’re safe on the other side
I’ll know you again…My Rose, My Bride

BUT SHE NEVER GOT TO MINGLE AT THE COUNTRY DANCE
HER VOICE WAS SILENT HER FEET WERE DUST
GOD BLESSED A WOMAN AIN’T NO MAN YOU CAN TRUST

STAY ANONYMOUS AND WE’RE BOUND TO WIN
DON’T LET THE RICH TAKE HOLD OF YOUR LIFE
LET’S ALL PUT AN END TO STRUGGLE AND STRIFE

PHILLIS::WHEATLEY written by Michael Hansen
Phillis was the first published African-American Poet
Phillis came over and African Slave…Landed Boston Harbor in the halcyon days…Lord, Mrs. Wheatley took her home…
She mimiced Mary and learned to talk…lord it wasn’t long she picked up the chalk…she learned the Bible with incredible speed…lord that black girl could read…
She remembered from her past but only a sight…her mother pouring water in the morning by rite…lord, but she believed what the bible told…
Children of Cain i’ll not stay with you…oh, Lord God clean me like new…You brought me from my Pagan land & you taught my soul to understand…
But Phillis loved her people & she loved them true…she wanted their soul’s to be new…oh, lord Phillis cried…
“Oh, Damnation ain’t bound to our skin…the glory of God is found within…Oh, you Negroes black as Cain…you may join the angelic train.”
The nobles they loved here but she never felt right…always covered by the company of white…lord, Mrs. Wheatley felt it best…
So Phillis she wrote with the darkening light…the fire could burn on throughout the night…her subjects and senses were all in tune…but lord that war it came too soon…
Bells were ringing all though the town…but Phillis she heard not a sound…Lord, she just didn’t have the time…
She loved America…She loved England too…She told England just what she knew…she said if you continue your grand tyrany…lord, lord you’ll lose greatly…
She went over to England but returned too soon…Mrs. Wheatley was sick in her room…Lord, they had to lay Mrs. Wheatley down…
But the war brought Phillis a worsened Fate…none of her poems could war times relate…so after quick praise from George Washington…her glory faded with the setting sun…
Phillis was freed but left helplessly alone…so she married a man to start a home…lord, Phillis what have you done?
She worked down in a boarding house shed…oh, Lord God two children were dead…her husband left poor Phillis all alone…oh, Lord won’t you please take Phillis home?
“Freedom comes arrayed with chimes divine…In her train commerce and plenty did shine”…oh, Phillis it was almost time…
Phillis she died on the last lord’s day…three children dead and her husband away…no one was there to weep and moan…lord, Phillis died all alone…
The kingfisher builds his nest on the sea…but the wind & the waves are wild and free…oh, Lord that day will come…

ALL SAINT’S EVE written my Michael Hansen
I remember all my saintly friends…I see their faces again..
i see their lost desires like the center of a gem…
They’ve all been down long back roads…they’ve all carried heavy loads…
There’s nothing very light about a life devoid of sin…
(chorus)
so hang me, oh, hang me…and I’ll be dead and gone…
Hang me, oh, hang me before i greet the dawn
Hang me, oh, hang me…and I’ll be dead and gone
Hang me, oh, hang me…Been on the job too long…too long
Martyrs they smoke cigarettes…watch blonds & reds & false brunettes
while they choose the county churches that they think that they might bless
but under their cloak of decency…there’s always so much more to see
and even the professors they can only forge a guess
(chorus)
And the road it is way too long…to ever level right and wrong
at christmas time the kittens they play beneath the tree
and love it is everything…it makes us raise our voices and sing
and everybody everywhere is already free…
(chorus)
